Ssal Shik - syang

In the DPRK, noodles are the norm. Due to land that is less fertile, crops are not as readily availible. Nangmyeon noodles are a very popular staple of the diet.
"The foundation of North Korean meals include cold noodles (Naung-myon), tofu, short-grain rice and porridge. Meats such as poultry, duck and beef are also North Korean staples, as are seafood and veggies." USA Today, travel tips.
Banchan & Barbeque
"The visitors from overseas are normally given abundant food to eat, including meat, vegetables, dairy products, and fruits. However,ordinary citizens do not eat such a variety of food. Also, the North Korean diet does not include spicy food using chili and garlic, traditional in the Korean diet: There is no kimchee as found elsewhere. Another point to stress is that they do not seem to have candies or sweets for children: sugar is in short supply and regarded.
One of the reasons fruits and candies are such great gifts is because they are so hard to come by. Food is rationed and any extra is appreciated. Candy is not readily available.
Fast Food
The Samtaesong restaurant in Pyongyang is the only fast food restaurant in the whole of North Korea. Super cheap fare is often bought only by visitors to the hermit nation. "The menu is careful not to call its signature fare a hamburger – lest it give the impression North Koreans had embraced the American icon." However, you can get "minced beef and bread"

Nangmyeon
Most people associate Korea (both of them) with Kimchi. However, the DPRK is very much without the spicy fermented dish. They do have their own version of kimchi made of various pickled vegetables. Why the difference? Well sugar and spices are hard to come by in the DPRK, so signature dishes that many think of when they think ‘Korea’ are done quite differently.
